ELO

The Elo rating system is a simple method to estimate the relative ability of participants in zero-sum games. All participants start with an initial ELO Rating of 1000, unless a specific division is assigned differently, at the beginning of the season.

Participants exchange points based on the outcome of a match where a participant who does better then expected improves their rating while a participant that does worse lowers their rating.

Stronger participants need to beat weaker participants so their rating doesn't decrease, while weaker participants can still improve their rating without winning against stronger participants. This provides an incentive for weaker participants to play against stronger participants.

RPI (Rating Percentage Index)

The rating percentage index, commonly known as the RPI, is a quantity used to rank participants based upon a participants's wins and losses and its strength of schedule.
