Metroball Youth Outreach
Metroball Youth Outreach, MYO (Metroball) is a Community Based 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit Organization that serves over 500 at risk youth living in the Washington, D.C. area. MYO programs are provided FREE of charge to all youth participants. Since it’s inception in 2000, Metroball has grown to become one of the largest youth sports organization in the city. Metroball provides mentoring and life skills through the use of sports programs for middle and high school youth. The program has formed partnerships with police officers, city officials, neighborhood partners, corporate sponsors, local school districts, community centers, and Boys and Girls Clubs. Sports are used as a mechanism to capture youth’s attention and steer them away from violence and deviant behavior. Once in the program, youth are supported academically to help shape them into productive citizens. For the past thirteen years MYO has created the most organized basketball activity in Washington DC through several vehicles: The After- School Programs (Skills Clinic), Amateur Youth Sports Programs, The Annual Summer Basketball Tournament, and our Sport Journalism program. The Annual Metroball New York Ave Classic Summer Basketball Tournament is a 10 week event that runs every Saturday from the middle of June through the Middle of August. Currently, this is the largest youth Basketball event in Washington DC. Up to 40 teams are separated by age group and play games every weekend leading up to a Round Robin single elimination tournament at the end (in August). This tournament is provided to prevent violence and violent behavior among youth in the summer.
